Designing Immigrant Services at Brooklyn Public Library
As part of the graduate seminar Public and Collaborative Services with Lara Penin, a team of fellow students and I conducted research and user interviews on how to improve immigrant services at the Brooklyn Public Library during the COVID-19 pandemic. We presented our research during a virtual workshop, where we codesigned solutions with 30 participants across a variety of backgrounds.
Service Blueprint
We started by mapping out all of the services BPL offered specific to immigrants, and tracking which services were ongoing or cancelled due to the pandemic.
User interviews
Prior to user interviews, we created a list of assumptions of what we thought immigrants might need during the pandemic. Once we conducted a number of interviews, we realized that public libraries have connects to places like local community groups, nonprofits, law centers, and more.
Workshop
We designed and facilitated an hour-long workshop to present our findings thus far and co-design potential programs for BPL to offer during the pandemic.
Prioritization exercise
Our workshop participants came up with several unique ideas and ranked them on a scale of feasibility for the library and impact for immigrant families.
Participant input
We gathered feedback on these ideas from our participants and passed along to the library to hopefully iterate on these ideas.
