Welcome to Goodcorp
For my studio project, I was interested in exploring the impact of corporations on climate change. A three-month research process led me down several rabbit holes of climate awareness, games for change, physical interactions, database storage, and ultimately a web-based narrative.
Concept and Research
After several weeks of research on what inspires people to take action on climate change, I realized that I needed to create a project that had a clear call to action: namely, to highlight the impact of corporate production on climate change.
I began by creating a visual identity and narrative for a corporation that kept making products that harmed the environment, even as it had negative effects on people. My intent was to put the user in the shoes of a corporate worker, and see what they would do when confronted with the dilemma of continuing vs. stopping production.
User flow
I quickly realized I had a branching, choose-your-own-adventure narrative on my hands, and created a flow of how a user might interact with an interface.
Building a game
At one point in the process, I paper prototyped the narrative as a kind of game. In it, the corporate manager has the same two choices to work or take action. I also introduced a consumer player that could take action against the corporate manager.
I playtested two iterations of the game, refining the core interactions of the experience.
Interactive web narrative
I eventually realized that the clearest way to demonstrate this narrative was through the web. Using CSS, JavaScript, and the ml5 library, I created an online web experiment.
